Building blocks Special Needs Magazine---The Family Forum section of Building Blocks is open to all parents and provides an opportunity to share and communicate with each other. Submissions can include (but are not limited to) short tidbits, an anecdote or thought, tips, suggestions or ideas, as well as essays. Submissions can be as short as you like with a maximum of 800 words or about 1 ½ pages.
In addition, we are looking to start a similar forum for individuals with developmental disabilities. This will be a place where individuals can share experiences and have their voice heard. They can either write it on their own or you can ask them what they would like to share and we can quote them. We are looking for submissions of original writing (all types as mentioned above). If someone with disabilities would like to be interviewed, we would be happy to be in touch with them.
The Family Forum deadline for the September 2017 Issue is August 9th. Please submit all articles to:
Transportation study---A research study is being done about how adults with disabilities use different modes of transportation in New Jersey. They are looking for members of the New Jersey Self-Advocacy Network, independent self-advocates, and family members to share their stories about how transportation has helped or hindered their ability to get around. Participants will answer questions during a short 10-minute interview. Answers will be used to develop a report about current positive and negative aspects of current transportation options. Support Group---A support group for women with various mood disorders including (but not limited to) bipolar and depression will be held at Yad Hachazakah, 1389 East 18th Street in Brooklyn beginning August 22, 2017. Sessions will be held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month from 10:30 am-12:00 noon. For more information contact Sarah at 646-723-3955,
Special Needs Shidduchim---There is a great need to work on Shidduchim for high functioning individuals with various needs. Two of the upcoming L’Chaim shidduch meetings will focus on this underserved population. If you know of someone looking for a shidduch, please join in.
