NYC Special Ed Tuition Reimbursement---Good news for New York City residents! A new rule will go into effect on September 1, 2014 which will make it easier for parents who send their children to non-public schools to receive reimbursement from the Board of Education. The administrative changes will:
Expedite Decisions: Where settlement is appropriate, DOE will seek settlement within 15 days of receiving notice of parent intent to unilaterally place their child in a school.
Reduce Extended Legal Battles: The DOE will refrain from re-litigating settled or decided cases, unless there is a change in the IEP placement recommendation. The DOE will avoid unnecessary litigation in cases where the agency is unable to offer a placement, or when a child is about to enter the final grade of a school.
Reduce Paperwork: Instead of requiring parents to submit full documentation every year, the DOE will only require that paperwork every three years, allowing for income eligibility updates to be made each year, as needed.
Expedite Payments: DOE will make tuition payments on a monthly basis when required by a program, and it will provide a payment schedule to parents following any settlement. Once parents win a claim for tuition reimbursement, the DOE will pay the tuition while the DOE appeals that decision to a higher level of review.
Sloatsburg Rest Area Minyan Opens this Week---For those of you traveling to vacation in the Catskills this summer, the Sloatsburg rest area on the NYS Thruway will have a designated minyan area for mincha/maariv on Thursday nights. The public is asked to obey the following rules:
1. All vehicles should be parked on the upper level of the parking lot only. The upper level has been designated as the minyan area as it is more private and will not disturb other travelers. Please note that any vehicles parked on the grass or illegally will be promptly towed away.
2. The Sloatsburg area is to be used for prayer only. The selling of food or merchandise will not be tolerated. Solicitations of tzedaka (collection for charity) will not be allowed. A Thruway inspector will be present at all times to enforces rules.
3. Never leave young children unattended in a vehicle, even just for a moment. They should be supervised at all times.
4. Restrooms and vending machines filled with kosher food will be available on the upper level of the building.
5. Slow down and proceed with caution when approaching upper-deck area. Yield to pedestrians when parking your vehicle.
