New Special Ed School In Brooklyn—Tiferes Mordechai Center For Integrated Learning will be opening this coming September in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. They are accepting high functioning ‘haimishe’ boys & girls aged 9—14 with language based learning difficulties. Special Needs Symposium—Yedei Chesed will be sponsoring a 2-day Special Needs Symposium at the Hotel Somerset Bridgewater on October 27-28 geared to religious Jewish parents of children with special needs. This hands-on event features numerous seminars from experts in their field on a variety of topics including transitioning to managed care, creating a special needs trust, technology enabled supports, and behavior management. In addition to these important topics, parents will receive chizuk and tips from therapists and rabbonim on emunah, tefillah, the tricky balance between the special needs child and themselves, and the benefits one can receive from counseling. Additionally, parents will have ample networking opportunities where they can gain more valuable information. This event is open to all parents, regardless of residence. Emergency Preparedness Special Needs Survey—A study is being conducted with the goal of improving emergency services to the deaf and blind communities. This survey will be conducted by email, with questionnaires being sent out 2—3 times. Results of the survey will be used in training security forces, MADA, and emergency representatives to better serve the deaf and blind. Special Needs Film Production—A group of students studying communication are producing a short movie about mainstreaming a child in educational frameworks. For this purpose, they need a family of a child with special need who still did not find a place for this school year, or a family of a child with special needs who encountered difficulties by the iriya to mainstream their child in regular ed. The movie will be filmed at the times that are most convenient for the family, in Jerusalem/Maaleh Adumim. Autism Research--A new medication is being tested in the Child Development Center at Tel Hashomer Hospital, to treat the core symptoms of Autism (speech impairment, communication and repetitive behavior). Children ages 5-18 who have been diagnosed on the Autism spectrum can join, free of charge. Research is initiated and managed by Dr. Lidia Gavis, director of the Child Development Center at SHIBA, Tel Hashomer Hospital. Education Workshops--Parents of adolescents with cognitive developmental disorders (moderate-high functioning) are invited to focused and practical workshops which will help your child advance.

  • Teaching your adolescent to read – 4-6 pm
  • Exposure to a reading-process guidance plan – 6:30-7:30 – FREE, advance registration
  • Teaching social skills to the adolescent – 8-10 pm

Cost for one workshop – 80 NIS.  Two workshops – 130 NIS.
