Career Camp--. JVS runs two Career Camps, one for students with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities and one for students diagnosed with an ASD. The objective of Career Camp is to help prepare students for work, training or education after high school. Session 1: for students with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities, July 29 – August 9. Session 2: for students diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, (ASD) August 12 – August 23
Career Camp 2012 will provide students the opportunity to engage in vocational activities designed to simulate job tasks and give hands-on experience developing a variety of different work skills. Camp activities will focus on vocational exploration, appropriate work behaviors, and social skills development. Classroom instruction will be interactive and include resume writing, completion of job applications, and practicing interview skills. Campers will also take field trips to community employment sites to learn about a variety of jobs available in areas such as health care, culinary arts, animal care, and horticulture. Seated Yoga Class—Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw NY is looking at offering a seated yoga class for individuals with mobility impairments, taught by an experienced yoga instructor who is herself in a wheelchair. If you are interested in joining this class, contact Matthew Castelluccio

Verizon Telephone Customers—If you are a Verizon customer and are disabled or a senior citizen 62 years of age or older, you can enroll in their “Special Protections” program. They will note your account and make every effort to avoid blocking or turning off your phone service if you are having trouble paying your bill. You will also automatically become eligible for priority repair service. You can also enroll in “Third Party Notification”, where a copy of your bill will be sent to a third party which you designate.

Kesher—Kesher is an organization providing various services to families dealing with special needs. Their services for English speakers include informational emails and a website with parent portals, discussion groups, etc. To join their English speakers list, contact Yael at
Extreme Makeover—One family dealing with a child with special needs will be chosen to have their home completely redone by Extreme Makeover. The lucky family will leave their home on a vacation, while their home is completely renovated, free of charge.
Eligible families are either volunteer/have a child with special needs with the following criteria:
- Live in a home which requires an upgrade or is not accessible for them for any reason
- Their home is a private house (or duplex, or garden apartment) – NOT an apartment in an apartment building
- The house is registered under their name
- Household includes children living in the house
- Agree to be photographed/videoed for the program
