WARNING SIGNS OF DRUG USE

Listed below are warning signs that a teen might be using drugs. It is important to note that many of these behaviors are present in teens for reasons unrelated to drug use. However, noticing these changes in a teen, especially if he or she is displaying a number of them, should alert parents to take a closer look at whether that teen may be involved with drugs.

Physical warning signs of drug abuse:

Bloodshot eyes; pupils that are smaller or larger than normal

Changes in appetite; weight loss or weight gain

Excessive sleeping

Deterioration in personal grooming or physical appearance

Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing

Frequent nosebleeds (from snorting)

Impaired coordination

Behavioral warning signs of drug abuse:

Missing medications (over-the-counter and/or prescription)

Missing money

Sudden interest in music associated with the drug culture

Acting isolated, silent, withdrawn, engaging in secretive or suspicious behaviors

Avoiding eye contact (due to shame, guilt, or to avoid getting into trouble)

New friends the teen is unwilling to introduce to his parents

Using perfume or air freshener to hide smell of drugs

Excessive use of mints, mouth washes, and gum

Decline in academic performance, along with apathy

Teen’s bedroom is strictly off limits

Use of eye drops to reduce eye redness

Lying, refusing to tell parents where he or she has been

Psychological warning signs of drug abuse:

Sudden personality and mood changes, irritability, angry outbursts, laughing at nothing

Periods of unusual hyperactivity or agitation

Lack of motivation; inability to focus, appearing lethargic or “spaced out”

Appearing fearful, withdrawn, anxious, or paranoid, for no apparent reason
