Bell's Palsy

A condition that causes paralysis on one side of the muscles that provide facial expression.  This is often accompanied by pain behind and below the ear, although the ear drum is clear.  An MRI scan will show inflammation around the facial nerve that appears as a bright red cord.  Treatment is with high dose steroids and antiviral medications.  In some cases, surgery may be performed to reroute or decompress nerves.
