Also known as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Accumulation of platelets and fatty deposits in and under the lining of the artery walls caused by damage to the inner wall of the artery. This narrows blood vessels and increases blood pressure. It cloggs arteries, not allowing enough blood to flow. Increases risk of cardiovascular disorders. Bits of plaque can break off of large arteries and cause stroke or heart attack. Symptoms include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, swollen feet and ankles, and pain in the shoulder, arm, jaw, or back. Treatment begins with healthier diet and exercise. Drugs that reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood clots are often prescribed. If necessary, surgical procedures such as balloon angioplasty, endarterectomy (removal of fatty deposits), thrombolytic therapy (local dissolution of clots) and bypass surgery may be recommended.
