Member of the autistic spectrum disorders group.  Causes impaired social interactions and communication, but no language delay.

Member of the autistic spectrum disorders group.  Causes impaired social interactions and communication, but no language delay.  Normal IQ. Usually diagnosed by age three.  Children show repetitive movements and have narrow, abnormally intense interests. Social isolation is the result of not understanding social rules and norms, rather than active withdrawal.  Lacking the ability to make eye contact, read nonverbal cues, or interpreting tone of voice makes it difficult to carry on two way conversations.  People with Asperger’s often have excellent rote-learning skills.  Adherence to routine and structure is an important part of their condition.  Intense concentration on interests often helps many have successful careers as adults.  Treatment includes behavioral therapy and/or drugs to manage anxiety, compulsive behaviors, obsessive thoughts, and depression due to social isolation.
