An inherited defect in which there is a lack of the pigment melanin. Results in little or no pigment in the hair, eyes, or skin, decreased vision or blindness, skin cancer. People with albinism often have multiple eye problems and suffer from squint, nystagmus, photophobia and myopia. Treatment includes visual aids such as eyeglasses and contact lenses, or surgery for vision problems, sunglasses and high protection factor sunscreen to help avoid sun exposure.
