Transverse Myelitis
An inflammatory disorder which occurs on both sides of a segment of the spinal cord. The body is affected from that point of the spine and below. Symptoms include pain in the thoracic (upper back) region, and affects leg movement. It can progress to abnormal sensations in the feet, paralysis, loss of bowl control, and urine retention. There is currently no cure. Treatment is by cortosteroids to reduce the inflammation and physical therapy.
