Strabismus
A visual defect in the eye where there is poor alignment of the six extraocular muscles that control movement of the eye, causing visual impairment and loss of depth perception. Symptoms include crossed eyes, uncoordinated eye movements, double vision, and loss of depth perception. Abnormal head posture, which helps the patient accommodate, is often exhibited. Strabismus must be detected early in children, as it can cause amblyopia, or “lazy eye”. Treatment can include patching, corrective glasses, prisms, or surgery.
