Septic Arthritis

Occurs when an infectious agent such as a bacterium directly attacks a joint.  People at greatest risk are intravenous drug users, people with joint implants, suppressed immune systems, or sickle cell anemia.  Usually affects the hip and knee joints.  See arthritis.
