Gout
A metabolic disorder that produces a painful form of arthritis. It occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in the joints or connective tissues, typically the big toe. Symptoms include episodic attacks of joint inflammation, intense pain, swelling, warmth, and redness of the affected joint. Treatment includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, or cholchicine, as well as preventive treatments to reduce uric acid. See arthritis.
