Filariasis

A group of diseases caused by infection by parasitic nematodes (roundworms) transmitted by mosquitoes.  Symptoms are elephantiasis swelling, swollen and painful lymph nodes, fever, nighttime wheezing, and cough.  Treatment includes annual doses of medications for up to six years, elevating limbs and a\bandaging to reduce swelling, meticulous cleansing to prevent secondary bacterial infections.
