Accessing Services And 'Natural Supports’
Everyone has a right to be involved in their community. There are many supports for people with disabilities to help them do just that. This workshop will discuss supports for accessing the community and will provide hands—on tools for helping students to obtain natural supports in the community. It will also include a discussion on how to navigate some of the challenges associated with accessing services. Registration requested.

Questions and concerns often arise when parents are planning to collect their own Social Security and they have a son/daughter with disabilities who receives SSI and Medicaid. This presentation will explain: Changes in Social Security benefits that occur for a son/daughter with IDD when a parent retires and collects their own Social Security, or if a parent becomes disabled or passes away. How to get Medicaid from New Jersey after the Medicaid that accompanied SSI is scheduled to end. What happens if their child with IDD receives Social Security benefits before the age of 18, due to the retirement, disability, or death of a parent. Registration requested.

This is an introductory course that will give attendees insight into working with school-age children and adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This training course will highlight general characteristics of ASD along the developmental life span. This workshop will provide information about the different opportunities that college may offer your student with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We will suggest steps to add to your student’s IEP that can help orient him or her to the differences between high school and college, and accessing supports offered to students with IDD. In this brief presentation with Brenda Smith Myles, attendees will be introduced to the Comprehensive Autism Planning System. CAPS is a simple means of ensuring that necessary skills are taught to the autistic individual, and that mentor support is provided in a meaningful way when needed.
