We Are One
By Golda Turner
We recently read in the weekly Parsha about the Jewish people leaving Mitzrayim (Egypt) and traveling through the desert to receive the Torah on Mount Sinai. We are told that at the giving of the Torah, all who were ill or disabled were cured. But how did the ill and disabled manage to get all the way there from Egypt?
I was picturing myself pushing and pulling my disabled 33 year old son in his wheelchair through the desert sands on the way to Mount Sinai with all of our belongings piled up on his lap, and thought “No way! This is not happening!” Or how about the mother whose autistic daughter either runs off or sits down in the middle of the road and refuses to budge. How did they get there?
Then I realized that there is something special about our people. We are like one giant family. Throughout the ages there have always been so many organizations and volunteers that are ready to help another Jew in need. No matter where in the entire world you are, no matter what your needs are, there will always be someone ready to lend a hand.
We made it out of Egypt to Mount Sinai. We made it across the world and through the ages. And we will make it today and tomorrow. Because we are one.
